Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Windows Server 2019 crashes or restarts automatically when hot adding vCPU.
  • Windows Server 2019 (build 17763.107) BSOD with the below message, or restart automatically after hot adding vCPU:
Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you.


Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.5

Cause

This error is caused by drivers using improper addresses.

Resolution

Microsoft has fixed this issue, for resolution see March 1, 2019—KB4482887 (OS Build 17763.348).

Workaround:
To work around this issue, reboot the OS or wait till it restarts automatically.

Impact/Risks:
Hot-add vCPU will cause BSOD and restart unexpectedly.
