Issue/Introduction

This article provides support consideration for running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host 7 in a VM on vSphere.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.5

Resolution

Support considerations include:

  • Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host begins with version 7.4.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host (RHEL Atomic Host) shares the same kernel as standard the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) distribution, which includes drivers for VMware’s paravirtual devices. Configuring VM to use paravirtual devices will provide the best performance.
  • Starting from version 7.3.5, the RHEL Atomic Host image is available from redhat.com as a vSphere OVA, which includes open-vm-tools packaged as a system contain. The image is configured to run open-vm-tools automatically and start the service via systemd.
  • The GuestOperations feature of open-vm-tools is not officially supported at this time because the GuestOperations commands are executed in the scope of open-vm-tools container.
  • Detailed installation and configuration instructions from Red Hat is available at https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux_atomic_host/7/html-single/installation_and_configuration_guide/#vmware_installation.
  • vCenter may indicate that a VM with RHEL Atomic Host contains "RHEL 6", but this will not affect proper virtualization of guest operating system.
  • Support of RHEL Atomic Host 7 requires vSphere/ESXi version 6.0 or later.
  • Guest disk information is not available for RHEL Atomic Host.
