Issue/Introduction

If a Server running VMware vSphere ESXi has Emulex LPe16xxx / FCoE cards installed, you experience these symptoms:

  • ESXi disconnected from vCenter Server
  • Virtual machines are non-responsive
  • In the /var/log/vmkernel.log file, you see entries similar to

  • The messages are repeatedly reported for 1 or a subset of LUN IDs
  • After rebooting the ESXi host, the messages are not reported anymore

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0

Cause

This issue occurs during error handling by the Emulex FC/FCoE (lpfc) native driver, and the driver incorrectly reports that the abort request timed out.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, upgrade the lpfc driver to version 10.2.340.18 or later, available at VMware Downloads.

Note: Contact your hardware vendor to determine the most recent qualified driver and firmware revisions for your server platform.
