Issue/Introduction
Symptoms:
After upgrading or installing ESXi to 5.1 and 5.5, the host-probe.log file repeatedly displays the message indicating that certificate verification is disabled.
In the /var/log/hostd-probe.log file, you see this message repeating every 5 minutes:
[FFDCBB90 warning 'Libs'] SSL_VerifyCbHelper: Certificate verification is disabled, so connection will proceed despite the error
Environment
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5 VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
Cause
The hostd-probe process documents each connection to the hostd process in the /var/log/hostd-probe.log file. The hostd-probe process is a process to monitor hostd. Previously there was a watchdog process, which only knew if hostd was still running or not. The hostd-probe process logs in to hostd to catch scenarios where hostd is alive but not servicing requests. The preceding messages indicate that the SSL is not enforcing any certificate verification.
Resolution
This is an expected behavior.
These messages do not affect the functionality or disrupt the system in anyway. Therefore, it can be safely ignored.
