Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
AppVolumes manager configured with VMC vCenter having two or more clusters then upload of prepackaged volumes (Apps/Writable template) works only with datastore associated with first cluster of SDDC (Cluster Name:Cluster-1 and Datastore: WorkloadDatastore) therefor restricting writables creation\app provisioning only to first cluster.

This limitation restricts admin from creating users writables in datastores associated with second and later clusters . Also this would block provisioning of appstacks from VMs from in second or later clusters as app template are not available on corresponding datastores.

Environment

VMware App Volumes 2.x
VMware App Volumes 2.15.x

Resolution

To resolve this issue, admin can configure to create writables and apps in second or later clusters datastores by copying Writables templates/app templates to second or later cluster datastores.
  1. Upload prepackaged volumes to Cluster-1 vSAN datastore by following below steps :
    1. From the App Volumes Manager, click CONFIGURATION > Storage. ( Storage location of first cluster in VMC vCenter is WorkloadDatastore as of current date VMC release).
    2. Choose a WorkloadDatastore as storage location from the drop-down list.
    3. Choose a Use vCenter from Host drop-down list.
    4. Select the volumes to be uploaded from check box listed under Volumes section.
    5. Click on Upload.
  2. Once upload is successful.
  3. Login to VMC created vCenter that has been configured in AppVolumes manager.
  4. Browse to Menu>Storage.
  5. Click on WorkloadDatastore from left side pane.
  6. Click on Files tab on right side pane.
  7. Select cloudvolumes folder and browse to writable_template.
  8. Select template vmdk file under folder and click on Copyto option.
  9. Select vSAN datastore where you want to upload templates and browse to path cloudvolumes->writable_template and click on Ok (Create folders if it does not exist in destination datastore).
  10. Repeat same for app_templates.
This would list newly added templates while creating app\writables if second or later cluster vSAN datatore is selected from AppVolumes manager during writables creation wizard or app provisioning wizard.
