Issue/Introduction

In the following set of conditions:
  • VM configured for protection by vSphere Replication
  • VM is a backup proxy
  • Backups are configured with hot-add
  • VM stops replicating with message:
A new disk was added to a replicated virtual machine. Replication will be paused until the new disk is configured for replication.

Cause

This is expected: vSphere Replication Administration

Presently, there is no mechanism/workaround to circumvent the operation of the "New Hard Disk" flag.

* Option ticked-/on: Recognize a new disk has been added and proceed to auto-replicate the new disk, without stopping existing replication.
* Option ticked-/off: Recognize a new disk has been added and pause replication. Then prompt user to reconfigure and decide whether to include or exclude newly recognized disk, where required by reconfiguring the job.

Resolution

vSphere Replication cannot be configured to automatically continue replicating, ignoring new vDisks.

Workaround:
In order to protect a backup proxy VM with vSphere Replication, change the backup software configuration so that is does not use the hot-add method.

Additional Information

Impact/Risks:
This work around may reduce the throughput performance for backups.
