Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Cannot run a virtual machine on a 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003,Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • Running a 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 the guest operating system fails.
  • You see the error:

    STOP Error: 0x000000D1 or STOP Error: 0x0000001E
    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1)

     
  • You have recently patched your guest operating system.


Cause

This issue occurs due to an incompatibility with the Microsoft patch 932596.
 
 

Resolution

Microsoft has released a security advisory to announce that an update is available for the Kernel Patch Protection feature, which includes 64-bit versions of Windows operating systems. Kernel Patch Protection protects code and critical structures in the Windows kernel from modification by unknown code or data. This update checks the protection for increased resiliency in Windows.
 
 
 
To resolve this issue, use one of these methods: :
  • Apply the hotfix mentioned in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 950772 "A computer that is running an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003, of Windows Vista, or of Windows Server 2008 randomly restarts and then generates a Stop error"
  • Uninstall Microsoft patch 932596.
