VMware Snapshot Provider Service is missing post upgrading on Windows VM.

Issue/Introduction

Troubleshooting and getting back missing Vmware Snapshot provider service.


Symptoms:

Unable to take Quiesce Snapshots

Unable to fix the issue by:

  • Modify the tools
  • Upgrade tools
  • Re-install tools
  • Running comreg.exe for VCBSnapshotProvider.dll


Environment

VMware vSphere 6.7.x
VMware vSphere 7.0.x

Resolution

 

  • Check the COM+ Applications list, the Vmware Snapshot Provider service will be present.
  • Right-click on the VMware Snapshot Provider service Disable and Delete the stale entry.
  • Go to the Control Panel and under Uninstall or change program, Vmware Tools > Change.
  • In the VMware Tools Setup dialog box select Next and Modify and Next.
  • Under Customer Setup go to Volume Shadow Copy > Entire feature will be unavailable.

 

  1. Then select Next then Change and Finish.
  2. Repeat steps 3 to 5, but in place of Entire feature will be unavailable select Entire feature will be installed on the local drive.
  3. Then completed the process by selecting Next then Change and Finish.
  4. Go back to the Services and the Vmware Snapshot provider service would be present in Manual state.

Impact/Risks:
