Unable to increase the screen resolution in a Workstation virtual machine

Issue/Introduction

• Unable to increase the screen resolution of a virtual machine to match the host in Workstation 11.x

Environment

VMware Workstation 11.x (for Windows)

Cause

The VMware SGVA 3D driver for Windows Vista or later guest operating systems in the VMware Tools version that comes with Workstation 11 limits the screen resolution to 2560x1920 in the virtual machine.

 

If the host supports resolutions higher than 2560x1920, you cannot configure the screen resolution of the virtual machine to those higher resolutions.

Resolution

To workaround this issue:

• Upgrade the VMware Tools to version 10.0.0 or later.
• Alternatively, you can upgrade Workstation 11.x to 12.x
