Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Upgrading to vRealize Automation 7.1 appliance fails.
  • In the VAMI page, you see error message:

    "Failed to install updates(Error while running pre-install scripts and post-install scripts) on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 5:53:19 PM GMT-07:00
    Disk 1 (/) is increased, but the file system is not resized properly.
    Pre-install: failed (code p-1)
    RPM Status 1: Pre install script failed, package test and installation skipped.
    Post-install: failed
    Update failed (code 1-1). Check logs in /opt/vmware/var/log/vami or retry update later.

  • Preupgrade phase fails on resizing of root partition. The /var/log/bootstrap/preupdate.log file shows entries similar to:

    /etc/bootstrap/preupdate.d/00-71-va-root-disk-resize starting...
    Root partition size is 46137344...
    Disk 1 is already resized and further modifications to the partition table are not needed. Checking fs size...
    Size of root fs is 16126920...
    Script /etc/bootstrap/preupdate.d/00-71-va-root-disk-resize failed, error status 1


  • The /opt/vmware/var/log/vami/vami.log file you see entries similar to:

    # resize2fs /dev/sda1
    resize2fs 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
    Filesystem at /dev/sda1 is mounted on /; on-line resizing required
    old desc_blocks = 1, new_desc_blocks = 3
    Performing an on-line resize of /dev/sda1 to 11534336 (4k) blocks.
    resize2fs: Inappropriate ioctl for device While trying to add group #125

    containing information for disk incorrect resizing or partitioning.



Environment

VMware vRealize Automation 7.1.x

Cause

This issue occurs if there is a corrupted disk.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:
  1. Review the related disks that are corrupted and repair them.
  2. Re-trigger the upgrade process.
