Issue/Introduction

Backup and restore operations tolerate transient network and server failure. However, sustained connectivity issues, or insufficient storage can cause the operation to fail.

Environment

VMware ESXi 3.5.x Embedded
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Embedded
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Embedded
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.5
VMware ESXi 3.5.x Installable

Resolution

Use the appropriate maintenance to keep servers and the network in a healthy state:

  • Reboot the servers regularly to clear the threads which are no longer required and boost performance.
  • Ensure servers have sufficient CPU, memory, Network bandwidth and Storage.
  • Ensure FTP or FTPS servers are configured to accept multiple connections.
  • Ensure that network connectivity between the vCenter Server and the FTP server is healthy.
  • Ensure that the FTP or FTPS user has enough storage quota to store the backup.
  • Clear old backup files from the FTP or FTPS server.
