Issue/Introduction

This article addresses a known issue where a Policy Xpress (PX) policy configured to trigger on a "Failed" SendEmailEvent enters an infinite execution loop if the email notification action within that same policy also fails.

Environment

Identity Manager 14.5

Cause

When a Policy Xpress policy is triggered by a SendEmailEvent in a "Failed" state, the policy attempts to execute an action (e.g., sending an email). If that secondary email notification also fails, it generates another "Failed" SendEmailEvent, which re-triggers the same PX policy, creating an infinite loop.

Resolution

To prevent this recursive behavior, configure the Policy Xpress policy to stop processing upon failure:

  1. Log in to the Identity Manager User Console.
  2. Navigate to Policy Xpress.
  3. Locate and select the problematic policy.
  4. Navigate to the Advanced Settings tab.
  5. Locate the Environment error category.
  6. Set the response to Fail Policy.
  7. Save and activate the policy.

This configuration instructs the engine to terminate the policy execution if an error is encountered, thereby preventing the loop.
