Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
When attempting to configure multiple default gateways in VMware NSX for vSphere 6.1.x, you experience these symptoms:
  • Creating a default gateway static route 0.0.0.0/0 fails on an NSX Edge.
  • You see this error even though no virtual machine NIC (vnic) is specified in the configuration:

[Routing] ECMP for default route can be used only when vnic is not specified. Please remove the vnic input 0 for network 0.0.0.0/0.

Environment

VMware NSX for vSphere 6.1.x

Resolution

This is an expected behavior with VMware NSX for vSphere 6.1.x.

You can work around this behavior by adding the default gateway as an additional address in the Next Hop field.

To add the gateway to the Next Hop field.
  1. Log in to the vSphere Web Client.
  2. Click Networking & Security and then click NSX Edges.
  3. Double-click an NSX Edge.
  4. Click Routing > Global Configuration
  5. Click Edit next to Default Gateway and delete the entry.
  6. Click Static Routes and add a new route, specifying 0.0.0.0/0 for Network.
  7. Select and interface and populate the Next Hop field with the gateway(s), separated by commas.
  8. Click Publish Changes.
Note: The Equal Cost Multi-Path (ECMP) feature must be enabled to allow manual configuration of multiple default gateways on an NSX Edge.
