Issue/Introduction

To change the Fibre channel primary datastore from SDDC manager

Symptoms:
  • Fibre channel workload domain primary storage facing issues and has a requirement to be decommissioned and replaced with newer hardware or new hardware vendor SAN
  • If datastore is already decommissioned from vSphere, day N workflows fail with error VSPHERE_DATASTORE_NOT_FOUND Datastore DatastoreName not found on the host

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 4.x

Cause

NA

Resolution

Kindly refer to the workaround.

Workaround:
  1. Create a new FC datastore. Please follow the steps to create a new data store.
1.1. Login to one of the host in the domain.
1.2. Go to storage -> select datastores tab -> New datastore

1.3. Login to other hosts in the domain
1.4. In each host go to storage tab-> do refresh and rescan in adapters and Device tab

1.5. refresh the page and now should be able to see the newly created data store in the Datastores tab for each of these host

  2. Storage vMotion all the running Virtual Machines to the new datastore (including vCLS Virtual Machines)
  3. Verify that old datastore is completely blank and new datastore is populated with correct Virtual Machine information
  4. Unmount and remove the old datastore from vSphere inventory.
  5. Rename the new datastore to same name as old datastore.

Note: Kindly contact VMware Technical support team if requirement is to change to a new datastore name from SDDC manager

Additional Information

Impact/Risks:
  • SDDC database change required if goal is to have a new datastore name
Note: Kindly take a snapshot without memory of SDDC Manager VM
  • Keeping same datastore name has no impact as long as we do not have any hosts in free/unassigned section
If we do have hosts in unassigned state, decommission and commission host back to SDDC Manager to reflect new datastore ID.
