Issue/Introduction
Symptoms:
Resetting the VMware vCenter Single Sign-On administrator password on vCenter server 6.0 fails with the error:
VmDirForceResetPassword failed (5)
.

You see this error message after using the Reset account password option.
You are using a Windows based Platform Service Controller.
You are logged in using a Domain Administrator, or any account other than a Windows Built-in Account.
Using the Windows Run As Administrator option also reports the same error.
Environment
VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x
Cause
This issue occurs because the
vdcadmintool
only supports authorizing Windows Built-in Accounts, such as
Administrator
.
Resolution
This is a known issue affecting vCenter Server 6.0.
The issue is resolved in vCenter 6.0 Update 3.
Workaround:
To work around this issue:
Log in to the system using the local administrator account.
Run the
vdcadmintool
command again.
