Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • When installing or upgrading to vCenter Server 5.5 on a Microsoft Windows platform using the Simple Install option, a dialog appears reporting a warning that a script is causing the browser to run slowly
  • You see the warning:

A script on this page is causing your browser to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?

  • Clicking No allows the installation to continue

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

This occurs because the time taken by the vCenter Server Simple Install option to complete the installation or upgrade of all required vCenter Server components exceeds the Windows registry setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Styles\MaxScriptStatements.

Resolution

To continue with the installation, you can answer No in the dialog that appears.

To prevent this warning dialog from displaying, set the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Styles\MaxScriptStatements Windows registry value to 0xffffffff.

To modify the Windows registry value:

Note: This procedure modifies the Windows registry. Before making any registry modifications, ensure that you have a current and valid backup of the registry and the virtual machine.

The preceding link was correct as of September 24, 2013. If you find the link is broken, provide feedback and a VMware employee will update the link.
  1. In vCenter Server, click Start > Run, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Styles\.
  3. Right-click MaxScriptStatements and click Modify.
  4. Change the value to 0xffffffff.

Note: The Registry entry is not available in IE10 and may require downgrade to resolve.
