Issue/Introduction

This article provides the information on database retention policy in VMware vCenter Server 6.0.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x

Resolution

In a fresh installation of vCenter Server 6.0, the database retention policy is enabled and set to 30 days for both tasks and events. This is by design in vCenter Server 6.0 to ensure that the vCenter Server database does not grow excessively.

If you are upgrading from vCenter Server 5.x to 6.0, the retention policy in vCenter Server 6.0 changes:
  • If the retention policy is not enabled, the default value is set to 180 days, upgrading vCenter Server enables the retention policy and sets it to 30 days.

  • If the retention policy is enabled and set to any value, after upgrading vCenter Server 5.x to 6.0, the vCenter Server 5.x database retention settings are preserved.
