Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Creating a virtual machine in the Web Client fails after changing the video settings to Auto-Detect.
• The virtual machine creation in Web Client fails with error:
  
  The operation is not supported on the object
   
• The /var/log/hostd.log file contains the entry:
  
  Video RAM size edit not supported when auto-detect is True
   
• The vCenter Server vpxd logs display errors similar to:

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

The issue occurs when the auto-detect video settings are enabled at the virtual machine creation in the Web Client.

Note: The auto-detect video setting works from the vSphere client.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

• Specify the video settings during the creation of the virtual machine.
• Use the video memory calculator to configure appropriate video memory.
