Issue/Introduction

Step-by-step instructions on how to apply a single storage policy to multiple VMs.

Symptoms:
Customer receives email stating there are multiple vSAN Objects which are out of compliance with the VMC SLA.

Resolution

  • Login to the VMC vCenter using [email protected] or an AD User Account which has the same permissions
  • Select the SDDC-Datacenter object > Click on VMs tab
  • Using a combination of Control, Shift, & Control + Shift clicking, select the batch of VMs which require a vSAN storage policy update
    • Customers will not be able to update the Storage Policy for VMs residing on the Management Resource Pool. Because of this, do no select any vCenter, SRM appliance, or HCX appliance VMs.
  • With the batch of VMs selected, right click one of the selected VMs and go to Edit Policies > Edit VM Storage Policies

  • There will be a warning asking "Perform action on X objects?" - Click Yes to proceed

  • Select the VMC vSAN Storage Policy which you wish to apply to the batch of VMs. VMC best practices state using the Managed Storage Policy, automatically generated and updated per cluster, allows for the most flexibility while maintaining resiliency. Read more on the VMC Managed Storage Policy. Click OK to apply the new Storage Policy.

Additional Information

Impact/Risks:
Changing the storage policy for workload VMs requires a vSAN resync to occur. There is a possibility for increased vSAN latency while the resync happens. Additionally, the more data data needing to be resynced at once, the longer the vSAN resync will take. Because of this, it is smart to work in smaller batches of VMs to allow for the vSAN resync to complete between each Storage Policy update.
