Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Enabling a serial port on a virtual machine fails with the error:

    Serial port (serial0) connection control operation failed.

  • In the /vmfs/volumes/<datastore>/<VM directory>/vmware.log, you see message similar to:

    <YYYY-MM-DD><time>| vmx| I120: [msg.serial.uri.nolicense.basic] The currently available license does not permit the use of remote serial ports.
    <YYYY-MM-DD><time>| vmx| I120: [msg.device.badconnect] Failed to connect virtual device serial0.

    Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.</time></time>


Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0

Cause

The issue is occurs when the ESXi host is not licensed to use the serial port.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, ensure that:
  • The ESXi host is licensed for Enterprise or above.
  • The ESXi is licensed for Remote Virtual Serial Port Concentrator.
