Issue/Introduction

The esx.problem.scsi.device.io.inquiry.failed message is received when the SCSI Inquiry command that your ESXi host uses to obtain basic information from a storage device fails.
This failure might be caused by several problems, including storage connectivity problems or issues with 3rd party storage plug-ins or storage devices.

Impact

The host cannot access and use SCSI storage devices.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Resolution

You need to detect and correct the problem causing the SCSI Inquiry to fail. Use the following methods:
  • Check if 3rd party storage plug-ins are installed on the ESXi host by running the following command:

esxcli --server=server_name storage core plugin list

  • Check storage management software for diagnostics and error logs.
  • Check if the storage device is in HCL.
