Issue/Introduction

For virtual machines running on ESXi 7.0, the power metrics "Energy usage" (energy) and "Usage" (power) might be off by a factor of 1000. I.e. a VM's reported power consumption is larger than the hosts total power consumption.

These metrics are also consumed by vRealize / Aria Operations as "Power|Total Energy (Wh)", "Power|Energy (Joule)" and "Power|Power (Watt)".

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x

Cause

Per VM energy usage is measured and calculated in millijoules and converted to subsequent metrics from there, this issue is caused by a failed step in the conversion.

Resolution

This issue has been fixed in ESXi 7.0 Update 3l , In rare scenario, the issue can also observed on ESXI version 8.0.3 build 24414501. However, this is resolved by upgrading the ESXI to version 8.0.3 build 24585383

Workaround:
You may work around this by dividing the values by 1000 to arrive at Watts and Joules respectively.
