Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
When deploying new ESXi hosts that contain Emulex Converged Network Adapters (CNAs), you experience these symptoms:
  • The FCoE adapter part of the Emulex CNA is not visible in VMware vCenter Server.
  • The FCoE adapter part of the Emulex CNA is not visible in a vSphere Client logged in to the host.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.5

Cause

This issue is caused when an incorrect adapter mode is selected in the Emulex CNA BIOS.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must select the correct mode in the adapter BIOS to enable the FCoE functionality of the Emulex Converged Network Adapter (CNA). To select the correct mode in the adapter BIOS:
  1. Reboot the host.
  2. When the prompted, press the appropriate function key to enter the BIOS of the CNA. See your vendor documentation to find out which function key to press.
  3. Select the NPAR mode. This stands for NIC Partitioning and enables the FCoE functionality of the CNA.
  4. Exit the BIOS and allow the host to complete the reboot.
