Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Storage vMotion fails.
  • You see the error:

Failed to create one or more destination disks. Canceling Storage vMotion.
Storage vMotion failed to create the destination disk Virtual_disk_name (Reason).

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Cause

This issue occurs due to these:
  • No such device or address
  • There is not enough space on the file system for the selected operation.
  • Cannot allocate memory.

Resolution

No such device or address

This error occurs if destination datastore path does not exist or is changed.

To resolve this issue, check the datastore path:

  1. Log in to the vSphere Client.
  2. Select a host from the Inventory panel.
  3. Click the Configuration tab.
  4. Click Storage in the Hardware panel.
  5. Click Datastores under View.
  6. From the list of configured datastores, select the datastore whose paths you want to view, and click Properties.
  7. Under Extents, select the storage device whose paths you want to view and click Manage Paths.
  8. In the Paths panel, select the path to view.

The panel underneath displays the name of the path. The name includes parameters describing the path: adapter ID, target ID, and device ID.

There is not enough space on the file system for the selected operation

This error occurs when destination datastore cannot accommodate virtual machine being migrated because it runs out of space.

To resolve this issue, increase the size of the datastore or free up space in the datastore.

Cannot allocate memory

This error can occur due to a memory addressing problem on the host attempting the Storage vMotion migration.

To resolve this issue, see Storage vMotion on ESXi 5.x fails with the error: Cannot allocate memory (2000026).
