Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • You regularly receive this message from vCenter server for iSCSI LUNs:

    Lost Path Redundancy state

  • The vmkernel/messages log contains a message similar to:

Lost path redundancy to storage device naa.6090b05840464b8a27c62431d5d7c8fb

Resolution

Many iSCSI targets do load balancing by requesting iSCSI initiators to logout and redirecting their re-login to another IP address. When the ESXi/ESX Software iSCSI initiator gets such a logout request, it notifies the storage stack of the path state change. This results in the Lost path redundancy to storage device naa.6090b05840464b8a27c62431d5d7c8fb message in the vmkernel/messages log file and the notification in vCenter Server. These message are due to target behavior.

These messages are not harmful and can be safely ignored if all expected paths are confirmed up and working. You can validate the number of working paths by navigating to a host -> Configure -> Storage Adapters-> Select the Adapter. You can view the number of targets and paths on a given adapter from there.
