Issue/Introduction

  1. Some devices may not respond consistently to SNMP GetBulk polling requests due to issues with the device MIB/SNMP service, in which case it may be useful to disable GetBulk requests for certain devices assigned to a SNMP Collector.
  2. How to configure the SNMP Collector to disable SNMP GetBulk polling on a per device basis?

Environment

Watch4net | M&R - 7.x

Resolution

  • This is achieved by specifying the parameter doNotUseGetBulkRequests in the snmp-polling-distribution.xml file for the relevant SNMP Collector configuration located e.g :<APG>/Collecting/SNMP-Collector/Generic-SNMP/conf/snmp-polling-distribution.xml

     Example:
<snmp-agent name="dev-1" ipAddress="1.2.3.4" transportProtocol="udp" snmpPort="161" timeout="1000" retries="2" snmpVersion="v2c" snmpCommunityOrUserV3Name="{community}" maxBulkSize="50" devtype="Router" doNotUseGetBulkRequests="true" onFailTryWith="v1"/> <snmp-agents-explicit-group name="APG-GENERATED-300.CISCO-IPSLA-INVENTORY.CISCO-IPSLA-STATSTABLE.CISCO-MEMORY.CISCO-PROCESS-POST12.2(3.5).CISCO-TUNNEL.CISCO-WAN-3G.GENERIC-INTERFACES-PART-IFXTABLE.GENERIC-SYSUPTIME.GENERIC-TRANSMISSION-TABLE-1">
  • Setting the doNotUseGetBulkRequests parameter to true disables GetBulk requests for that specific device.
  • This parameter should be used with the understanding that polling times may be extended considerably for the specified device.
  • A restart of the SNMP Collector service is required.

Additional Information

  1. The polling distribution configuration is the list of SNMP agents which may be polled by the SNMP Collector.
  2. It also defines the SNMP agents groups which may be used, alongside the individual agents, in the polling groups defined in the slave-snmp-poller.xml XML file.
  3. The snmp-polling-distribution.xml file describes those agents and groups.
