A virtual machine fails to power on with the error: DVS cannot be found

Environment

A virtual machine was moved from an existing vCenter with a distributed switch to a new vCenter, where the distributed switch no longer exists. 

Problem can be found in multiple versions of vCenter

Cause

The virtual port ID associated with the virtual machine no longer exists. 

Resolution

Please ensure the virtual machine is configured to use an existing network label:
  1. Right-click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
  2. Select the network adapter and choose an existing network label.
