Resolution

PPP interfaces are classified into Dial-On-Demand group under threshold settings.

For those interfaces that SMARTS applies "DialOnDemand Interface Setting" we see the following behavior:

1. The Mode attribute of the interface will be updated with type :: "ONDEMAND"
2. The IP address that is being configured under this interface will be automatically removed from the SNMP Agent address list.
3. Because of this, the monitoring of the device will be at risk, as the interfaces are not active interfaces and get monitored only on demand.

If this is the only IP address that is configured as a management address on the device and if there is no other reachable IP address to the device in question then SMARTs will flag this device DOWN as the IP address is getting removed from the AgentAddressList. The cause for the device DOWN is because it lacks instrumentation on the IP address which is responsible to populate its status.

This is because the IP is configured as backup interface where SMARTS will treat the IP differently and remove the instrumentation. This is working as designed.

As part of polling and threshold settings, create a separate group and put these management PPP interfaces into it and apply normal interface settings instead of OnDemand settings. This way we instruct SMARTS to see the interfaces as normal and monitor them.
