Smarts ESM: Receiving Discovery Errors Using SMI-S. Unable to discover Arrays on VNX; Discovery error: java.lang.null.pointer error

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:


Discovery in ESM will not show or monitor VNX Storage Array and Storage Array components if the SMI-Service reports Discovery Error and shows java.lang.null.pointer error.   

ESM reports Device using SMI-S for discovery and the device stays on the pending list with the following  java.lang.null.pointer error.

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

The host name in IP was showing as the short name, where as ESM had the fully qualified domain name FQDN.  The SmsiProviderService also shows as the SMISPS-<FDQN>.   Due to the name mismatch the Discovery process using SMI-S could not complete.

Resolution

The IP domain must have the matching FDQN name of the device as ESM in order for SMI-S to complete the discovery process and discover  the Storage Array and components properly
