How do traps get processed through the Trap Adapter server into Smarts?

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Resolution

The trap can be forwarded by a trap exploder, to a trap adapter.  

Once the trap is received by the trap adapter, flow of the trap processing is shown below.

Trap Adapter Information Flow:

• The Trap arrives at the SNMP Trap Adapter
• A forwarding decision is made based on trapd.conf 
• The trap definition for the trap is in the trap-mgr-conf file
• The trap is parsed by trap_mgr_parse.asl
• The parsed trap is matched against entries in trap_mgr.conf
• If a match is found, a notification is created based on the matching trap definition
• If the trap definition includes an ASL hook-script, control is passed to the hook-script
• The notification is created/updated in the Smarts OI (Adapter Platform) server.
