Issue/Introduction

Overview of configuring the following Vcenter host alerts so ESM can read them. By following these instructions these events in Vcenter will be imported into Smarts ESM.

  • VirtualMachine VMCPUUsageAlarm
  • VirtualMachine VMMemoryUsageAlarm

Environment

Smarts 10.1.X / 2.X

Resolution

To have this Vcenter alert - VirtualMachine VMCPUUsageAlarm-  show in Smarts ESM, follow these steps:

  • Login to vCenter.
  • Click on the vCenter Name on the LHS. Select Alarms > Definitions on the RHS.
  • Select the  Virtual machine CPU usage  event and right click on the event definition and select edit settings.
  • Define the thresholds as per your requirement.
  • Whenever the Virtual Machine crosses the Alert threshold settings,  Virtual machine CPU usage  event will be generated in the vCenter.
  • Smarts will pick up this event from the vCenter and will be shown  VirtualMachine VMCPUUsageAlarm  event in ESM Server.




To have this alert in Vcenter - VirtualMachine VMMemoryUsageAlarm -  show in Smarts ESM, follow these steps:
 

  • Login to vCenter.
  • Click on the vCenter Name on the LHS. Select Alarms > Definitions on the RHS.
  • Select the  Virtual machinememory usage  event and right click on the event definition and select edit settings.
  • Define the thresholds as per your requirement.
  • So whenever the Virtual Machine crosses the Alert threshold settings,  Virtual machinememory usage  event will be generated in the vCenter.
  • Smarts will pick up this event from the vCenter and will be shown  VirtualMachine VMMemoryUsageAlarm  event in ESM Server.


Similar procedure needs to be followed for Host CPU usage and Host Memory usage in vCenter, which will trigger HostCPUUsage Event and  HostMemoryUsage Event on Hypervisor in ESM Server.
