Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Does Smarts use the MIB value of temperature value, or it's own to determine if an event/trap needs to be raised.
How do I tell Smarts not to use the MIB value of the temperature threshold value of the MIB?
Can I set a temperature threshold value for a device, or group of devices?

On occasion you want to override the temperature threshold value of a vendors MIB and set your own value on a group by group , or device by device basis.

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

By default Smarts IP manager will use the MIB value of the temperature threshold value as per the vendor.  If it is not present in the MIB we will use our own default value..

Resolution

You can set your own threshold value, and disable the MIB value of a vendors device.

To disable the temperature threshold values for the mib for you device, follow these steps:
  • Login to your IP Domain manager and navigate to Domain Manager Administration Console.
  • Click on Configure > Polling and thresholds.
  • Click on the thresholds tab.
  • Navigate to you device, or device type group.  Hint:  For device type, look under "System resource groups"
    • Your choices will be a device type such as router, switch, or a group that dynamically collects all these values called the  temperature sensor group.
  • Click on the device , such as router, and then settings, and then environment.
  • To disable Smarts from using the MIB devices value as declared by its MIB, set "UseMibthresholds to off.

Once you have disabled smarts from using the MIB value for temperature threshold values of the device, you can set the temperature threshold values for your device, or device group, by following these steps.  In tihs example we will use router as our device group.
Note: these steps follow on from the above.
  • While in the router group, you can set both the TemperatureHighThreshold value to the required degrees in C.
