Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Can the Smarts Trap Adapter, parse a Varbind that specifies an IP address and then use that IP address as the Source IP for the Trap.

Case scenario, Customer has a third party applicating that monitors devices and can be configured to generate a trap.  However the Source IP address of the trap is in a varbind, and not the used as the Source IP address for the trap.

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

Smarts will use the Source IP address of the trap as indicated by the trap, as Smarts follows the standard RFC 1215 for SNMP Traps.

https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1215
https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3413.html

The RFC 1215 does not allow the Source IP address of the trap to be reviewed from a varbind, and not the used as the Source IP address for the trap.

Resolution

Smarts will use the Source IP address of the trap as indicated by the trap, as Smarts follows the standard RFC 1215 for SNMP Traps.  Smarts cannot review the varbind for a Source IP address and then change the trap's actual Source IP address.

There is no resolution for this request.  It does not follow the RFC Standards presented at this time.

For a more complete explanation on the allowed trap variables and varbinds please review the following document.
