Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
CurrentUtilisation of On-demand/Serial Interface in VMWare Smart Assurance IP has no values and is also grayed out
There is No Utilization value for On-demand/Serial Interface in VMWare Smart Assurance IP

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

VMWare Smart Assurance IP does not do performance instrumentation for On-demand/Serial interfaces by default. This feature is disabled by default to avoid unnecessary polling of these interfaces, because these type of interfaces are typically larger in number and will regularly be in Down state.

Resolution

If you want to monitor On-demand/Serial interfaces for performance, you must configure these settings as follows:
  1. In Polling and Threshold select Dial-on-Demand > Settings > Dial-on-Demand Interface Support. You should see only one parameter (MaximumUptime).
  2. Select Dial-On-Demand > Add
  3. Add the Generic Interface/Port Performance option
  4. Run a Reconfigure operation.
  5. Confirm that after 240 seconds, the CurrentUtilisation values are populated and are no longer greyed out.

You can also selectively enable monitoring of On-demand/Serial interfaces by creating a separate group for the interfaces you want to monitor.
