The different types of NCM auto-discovery available and their appropriate uses are as follows:
SNMP-sweep: This type of auto-discovery can be used if the IP addresses of devices to be discovered is known. This is the most productive and accurate way to discover medium size network i.e ~2500 devices.
Ping-sweep: This type of auto-discovery can be used if the IP address range is known, while the exact IP address of each device is not known.
Multi-hop: This type of auto-discovery is recommended if IP addresses or IP address range of devices within the network are not available. It is advisable to avoid this type if possible as it is very slow and consumes a large amount of server resources.
