Issue/Introduction

When device config is pulled, in history tab of Device properties, CREATED BY is available; it takes several values like below:

  • EXTERNAL:snmp
  • EXTERNAL:Device
  • EXTERNAL:syslog
  • Unknown
  • <USERNAME>

Environment

NCM - 10.1.x

Resolution

  • If a user schedules a push/pull from NCM or modifies the device in a Cut-Through, it would show that user in the Created By column.
  • SNMP Traps and Syslog messages would show EXTERNAL. The external SNMP notification indicates that a pull of the device configuration was done because of the receipt of an SNMP trap, most likely a config change trap. There is a "comments" area in the DCS which may contain information from the trap about the user or method that was used to make the change.
  • Configuration revisions marked as "Unknown" indicate changes made outside of the NCM system such as someone using telnet to connect to the device and make a change.

Additional Information

To ensure that the user is indicated for device changes, make all NCM device changes using NCM push or Cut-Thru functionality.
