Cisco ASA and FWSM devices discover as device class Generic rather than Cisco PIX.

Issue/Introduction

Wrong device class or generic class is associate to newly discovered device. 

Environment

NCM-10.1.x

Cause

SNMP credentials were supplied for discovery while the Generic device class is enabled.
SNMP credentials cannot be used to discover ASA or FWSM devices since these devices provide a very limited SNMP MIB, which cannot be used by NCM to determine if the device is unique.

SNMP based discovery is not supported.

Resolution

1. Completely remove problematic devices that were discovered as Generic.
2. Open up the saved Auto Discovery configuration used to originally discover these devices.
   • If Single Device Auto Discovery was used then open this window and proceed to step 3.
3. Go to the Credentials tab and either remove or do not supply SNMP credentials so that only Account and Privilege credentials have been supplied.
4. Rerun this discovery job.
