Smarts NCM: Device server wont restart the voyence service with error: service voyence start [FAILED]

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:


After stopping and then attempting to start the voyence service the following error is thrown:

                                                           [FAILED]
[root@rdl11262app39 devserver]# service voyence start   [FAILED]
Starting Device Server Service: Device Service is already started, stop the other process first before starting the services: Address already in use
                                                           [FAILED]
[root@rdl11262app39 devserver]#

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - NCM

Cause

The DS processes are stuck and so the service is unable to restart

Resolution

The issue can be solved by killing the commmgr and autodisc processes. You can do this from the Task Manager in Windows or with the kill command in UNIX

Then start the service with the command service voyence start

Should this fail the next step would be to restart the Device Server so all the processes can restart and this will allow the service to restart. 

You restart the Device Server by rebooting the server
