Issue/Introduction

Title: Alarm for Edge Datapath NIC throughput very high on Bare Metal Edge
Event ID: edge_health.edge_datapath_nic_throughput_very_high
Alarm Description

  • Purpose: Indicates Edge Datapath NIC throughput is nearing or is at 100% capacity.
  • Impact: Tx drop might be observed when throughput reaches 100%

Environment

VMware NSX-T 3.x
VMware NSX 4.x

Edge Form factors:
  • Bare Metal Edge

Note: Prior to VMware NSX 3.2.4 and 4.2.0 this alarm was present for Edge VMs. This resulted in false alarms due to incorrectly determining the capacity of the virtual NIC. On impacted versions, the alarm can be ignored for Edges VMs. This alarm should be actioned for Bare Metal Edges on all releases.

Cause

High throughput is causes by high traffic volume. Alarm is raised when the throughput is at a 100%

Resolution

Steps to Resolve
For 3.2.0 and higher

Examine the traffic throughput levels on the NIC and determine whether configuration changes are needed. The 'get dataplane throughput <seconds>'  Edge CLI can be used to obtain throughput.

Recommended Action:

Edge node's throughput can be increased by

  • Introducing LAG config
  • Upgrading to a NIC with higher bandwidth/speed.
