Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • 'VMware Tools user service' generates a core file every time when started.
  • 'DesktopEvents' plugin is not loaded by tools in Ubuntu 17.10


Cause

This issue is specific to Ubuntu 17.10 VM. Whenever an interactive user session starts, 'VMware Tools user service' starts and because of an issue, the user service generates a core dump while loading 'desktopevents' plugin. But the tools service continues to run and provides all other functionalities.

Resolution

To resolve this issue,
  1. Install / Upgrade to the latest 10.2.0 version of 'VMware Tools'.
or
  1. Uninstall the tar based installation of 'VMware Tools' and install 'Open-VM-Tools' version of tools' using 'sudo apt-get install'.
  sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools
  sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop


Additional Information

Impact/Risks:
desktopEvents plugin will not be loaded by ‘VMware Tools’ user service.
