Issue/Introduction

The purpose of this article is to aware user about the limitation of NSX-T in-place upgrade.

Symptoms:
1) In-place upgrade pre-check errors out with "Excess VNICs detected".


2) Host NVDS will have more than 50 VNICs in Flash-2.4 or more than 100 VNICs in Firestar-2.5.

Environment

VMware NSX-T

Cause

NSX-T in-place upgrade have a limitation of number of VNICs per host to guarantee a traffic outage during upgrade.
Flash-2.4 = MAX VNICs 50 , Expected traffic outage ~ 30 seconds
Firestar-2.5 = MAX VNICs 100 , Expected traffic outage ~ 38-40s

Resolution

Vmotion the VMs till VNICs are below the limit.

Workaround:
Vmotion the VMs till VNICs are below the limit.

Additional Information

Impact/Risks:
In-place upgrade pre-check will impact and not proceed to another host.
