Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • The guest operating system (OS) reports free space on disk.
  • The virtual machine disk is a thick VMDK.
  • By assumption, cloning VMDK in a thick format to VMDK in a thin format should result that the effective occupied space by the VMDK in thin format should be the effective occupied space reported by the guest OS.
  • The usage shows that generally the VMDK in thin format occupy a space superior to the one reported by the guest OS.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware ESX 4.1.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Installable
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Embedded
VMware ESXi 4.0.x Embedded
VMware ESX 4.0.x
VMware ESXi 4.1.x Installable

Cause

For blocks to be reported as free space they must contain zeros. After conversion the space remains reported as non-zeros.
