Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on vCenter Single Sign-On and the Platform Services Controller compatibility regarding the use of qualified load balancers that supply high availability as well as their requirements between versions of vSphere.

Only local load balancers (often times referred to as LTM, or Local Traffic Manager) are supported for PSC HA.

Note: VMware does not support the configuration or setup of the load balancer used to provide high availability within a vSphere environment. If problems are experienced when the third-party load balancer is used for Platform Services Controller high availability, VMware offers best effort support for any issues encountered with the environment. However, VMware reserves the right to not support the environment until a compatible load balancer is used. For more information, see the VMware third-party hardware and software support.

Resolution

This table describes the compatible load balancers that can be used with vCenter Single Sign-On (SSO) or Platform Services Controller (PSC) to provide high availability. Please see the notes where applicable.

Requirements by Version:
Minimum requirements for using a load balancer with vCenter SSO or PSC.

vSphere 5.1
  • Ability to load balance single TCP port
  • Ability to load balance single HTTP/S port
  • Ability to have session affinity to a single node (i.e. Sticky Sessions)
  • Ability to control request timeout intervals
For guidance on setting up the load balancer for SSO HA in vSphere 5.1, see Configuring VMware vCenter Single Sign On for High Availability (2033588).

vSphere 5.5
  • Ability to load balance single TCP port
  • Ability to load balance single HTTP/S port
  • Ability to have session affinity to a single node (i.e. Sticky Sessions)
  • Ability to control request timeout intervals
For guidance on setting up SSO HA in vSphere 5.5, see the Configuring VMware vCenter SSO High Availability for VMware vRealize Automation White Paper.

vSphere 6.0:
  • Ability to load balance multiple TCP ports
  • Ability to load balance multiple HTTP/S ports
  • Ability to have session affinity to a single node (i.e. Sticky Sessions)
  • Ability to have session affinity to the same PSC node across all configured ports (.i.e Match Across Services)
  • Ability to control request timeout intervals
For guidance on setting up the load balancer for PSC HA in vSphere 6.0, see one of the following:
For guidance on setting up PSC HA in vSphere 6.0, see one of the following:

vSphere 6.5:
  • Ability to load balance multiple TCP ports
  • Ability to load balance multiple HTTP/S ports
  • Ability to have session affinity to a single node (i.e. Sticky Sessions)
  • Ability to have session affinity to the same PSC node across all configured ports (.i.e Match Across Services)
  • Ability to control request timeout intervals
For guidance on configuring Platform Services Controller HA in vSphere 6.5, see Configuring Platform Service Controller HA in vSphere 6.5 (2147018).

Additional Information

For additional support on third-party high availability load balancers, file a Feature Request or engage the VMware account team in filing a Request for Feature Enhancement (RFE) through a Request for Price Quotation (RPQ). For more information, see Making a VMware feature request (1002123).
