Host CPU - MHz, Host Mem - MB, and Guest Mem - % fields report a zero value in ESX/ESXi hosts managed by vCenter Server 5.1

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

When VMware ESX and VMware ESXi 4.0 hosts are managed by VMware vCenter Sever 5.1, you experience these symptoms:

• The Summary tab of the virtual machine reports 0 (zero) value for all CPU and memory related metrics.
• You experience the same issue in the Virtual Machines tab for the host/cluster.
• This issue occurs for all virtual machines running on ESX/ESXi 4.0 and 5.1 GA hosts managed by vCenter Server 5.1.
• Virtual machines running on ESX/ESXi 4.1, 5.0, and 5.1 show the correct statistics for the same counters.
• Direct vSphere Client connection to the host shows the correct information.
• vSphere Web Client exhibits the same behavior.
• The DRS Resource Distribution Chart does not report CPU or memory related information.
• Real time performance charts are available for all virtual machines, regardless of host versions.

Cause

This issue occurs only when vCenter Server 5.1 manages ESX/ESXi 4.x and/or ESXi 5.x hosts.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in VMware vCenter Server 5.1 Update 1a, available at VMware Downloads.

To workaround this issue when you are unable to update vCenter Server, upgrade the ESX/ESXi 4.0 hosts to ESXi 5.1 Update 1 is to restart the Management agents on the host. For more information, see the Restarting the Management agents on an ESXi or ESX host (1003490).
