Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Cannot install vCenter Server 5.5 on a Windows 2012 R2 system.
• Cannot install vCenter Server 5.1 Update 1.x on a Windows 2012 R2 system.
• Installing vCenter Server 5.1 Update 1 or vCenter Server 5.5 on a Windows 2012 R2 system fails indefinitely after displaying the message:

• The vminst.log file (located at %temp%) contain entries similar to:

Cause

This issue occurs because vCenter Server 5.1 Update 1.x and vCenter Server 5.5 on a Windows Server 2012 R2 system is not supported. For more information, see Supported host operating systems for VMware vCenter Server installation (2091273).

Resolution

The following versions of vCenter Server now support the use of Windows Server 2012 R2 as the Host OS:

• vCenter Server 5.1 Update 2. For more information, see the vCenter Server 5.1 Update 2 Release Notes. You can download vCenter Server 5.1 Update 2 from VMware Downloads.
  
  
• vCenter Server 5.5 Update 1. For more information, see the vCenter Server 5.5 Update 1 Release Notes. You can download vCenter Server 5.5 Update 1 from VMware Downloads.

To resolve this issue, ensure that you are installing vCenter Server 5.1 Pre-Update 2 and vCenter Server 5.5 Pre-Update 1 on a supported operating system.
