Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • During an SRM Test Failover / Planned Migration / Disaster Recovery or Cleanup of Test Failover the SRM workflow might fail with "Error - An error occurred while communicating with the remote host"
  • The host(s) listed in the error may have experienced a vpxa process crash which will be located in /var/core directory of the ESXi host "vpxa-zdump"
  • This issue affects ESXi 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5

Cause

This issue is caused by a memory corruption issue in StdIO_ReadNextLine module of the vpxa service. When the vpxa service crash takes place it interrupts SRM and vCenters communication with this host and status updates from active task fails.

Resolution

This issue is fixed in the following releases of ESXi:

6.5 U2 build 8294253
6.0 P07 build 9239799
5.5 U3k EP17 build 9919047

To resolve the issue, upgrade the ESXi hosts at the recovery site to these builds or higher.
