Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Editing the portgroup information of a virtual machine running on a VMware ESXi 5.1.x host using the vSphere Web Client fails
  • You see the error:

Port does not exist on distributed switch vDS_Name

Cause

This issue occurs when the network adapter properties are expanded. This displays the Port ID field, which is mandatory and is not automatically populated.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in VMware vSphere Web Client version 5.5 and later. For more information, see Installing the vSphere 5.5 Web Client on a Microsoft Windows platform (2058262).

To work around this issue, enter a valid port number on the VMware vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS).

Alternatively, do not expand the Network Adapter settings when changing the port group.
