Installing a Linux virtual machine with an e1000e network adapter fails

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

When creating an RHEL 7.1 or later, or SLES 12 Linux virtual machine, you experience these symptoms:

• Attempts to install Linux fail when there is an e1000e network adapter in the virtual machine configuration.
• On virtual machine creation, with an e1000e network adapter: Post power on of the virtual machine, the installation hangs and a black screen is presented.
• A kernel dump occurs if you hotadd an e1000e network adapter to an existing RHEL 7.x virtual machine.
• In the crash dump directory, the vmcore-dmesg.txt file shows entries similar to:
