ESXi 6.x fails to join AD with error "Operation timed out"

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Adding an ESXi 6.x host to an Active Directory domain fails.

The process is unresponsive for an hour before returning the message "Operation timed out."

Note: IPv6 and IPv4 are in use on the domain controllers. However, on the ESXi host, IPv6 is disabled and IPv4 is enabled.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting ESXi 6.x. Currently, there is no resolution.

To workaround this issue, enable IPv6 on the ESXi host or disable IPv6 on the domain controllers.
