Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Cannot modify the vApp networking field in VMware vCloud Director (vCD)
  • Modifying the vApp networking field fails
  • The vApp update task fails with the error:

    Cannot update

  • In the vcloud-container-debug.log file, you see entries similar to:

    | ERROR | Quartz-pool-1-thread-999 | TaskServiceImpl | Unable to execute task VDC_UPDATE_VAPP java.lang.NullPointerException at com.vmware.vcloud.net.impl.NetworkConfigurator.nicSupportedForIPTranslation(NetworkConfigurator.java:1914) at com.vmware.vcloud.net.impl.NetworkConfigurator.sanitizeRulesInUpdatedVAppConfig(NetworkConfigurator.java:3419)

Cause

This issue occurs if you modify the vApp Network (setting it to none or adding a new network) on the destination Org vDC after copying a vApp (with a vApp Network connected to an Organization network) in an Org vDC (across pVDC and vCenter Server) to another Org vDC that does not have any Organization network present.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in vCloud Director 5.1. You can download the latest release from the VMware Download Center.

To work around this issue when you do not want to upgrade, create an Organization network in the destination Org vDC and attach the vApp Network to this network before updating the vApp Network configuration. For more information, see the vCloud Director Administrator's Guide.
